Sar-e-Sang Lapis: The Ancient Secrets of Kings

Authentic Sar-e-Sang Lapis Lazuli specimen

For over 6,000 years, Sar-e-Sang Lapis Lazuli has been the world’s most prized blue gemstone..

Tucked deep within the rugged Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, these ancient mines are the birthplace of the most sought-after Lapis Lazuli in history. At Badakhshan-E-Bazaar, we believe that to own a piece of Lapis is to own a piece of this incredible 6,000-year legacy.

The Royal History of Sar-e-Sang Lapis

Long before the modern world, the “Blue Gold” of Sar-e-Sang was already legendary. Archaeologists have discovered Sar-e-Sang Lapis in the most iconic treasures of antiquity:

  • Ancient Egypt: The funeral mask of King Tutankhamun features vibrant blue inlays from these very mines.
  • Mesopotamia: The Sumerian Standard of Ur was decorated with Badakhshan Lapis as a symbol of royal divinity.
  • The Renaissance: Master painters like Vermeer and Michelangelo ground this stone into “Ultramarine” pigment—the most expensive blue in the world—to paint the robes of the Virgin Mary.

What Makes Sar-e-Sang Lapis Unique?

Not all Lapis is created equal. While Lapis is found in Chile or Russia, the geological conditions at Sar-e-Sang are truly one-of-a-kind.

  1. The Deepest Blue: High concentrations of the mineral lazurite give our stones that signature “Midnight Blue” hue.
  2. Pyrite Stars: The legendary “golden flecks” you see in high-grade Lapis are actually crystals of iron pyrite. In Sar-e-Sang stones, these often look like a clear night sky filled with stars.
  3. Minimal Calcite: Lower-quality Lapis is often streaked with white calcite. Sar-e-Sang is famous for producing “AA” and “AAA” grades with pure, deep color.

A Mountain Journey

Even today, reaching the mines is a feat of endurance. Located at altitudes of nearly 3,000 meters, the mines are often accessible only by mule or on foot along treacherous mountain paths. This isolation is why the stone remains so rare and why every piece at Badakhshan-E-Bazaar is selected with such personal care.
